Symbolism is a very important part of Chinese culture. It can be seen pretty much everywhere; in paintings, carvings, architecture, and furniture.
We will meet Helen, who is from a famous Chinese family, and the sponsor of many celebrity opera stars. Collecting antiques in China since the 1920's, we will view their amazing collection of embroidery, jewelry (Kingfisher feather art), foot binding shoes, porcelains and jades. Most of which were originally made for imperial courts and traditional Chinese opera stars. This collection will illustrate many pictorial motifs and we will unlock the mysteries of these propitious signs, offering a fascinating glimpse into the time-honored importance of auspicious symbolism in Chinese culture.
Today, we will explore the following topics building from a few simple forms to more complex concepts. What do these symbols (animals, fruits, flowers, characters) represent? Who are the Gods of Luck and Prosperity? How can we recognize the ideas behind the characters and their meaning?
