Museum Talk - Chinese Bronze
Few works of art are as remote or unique to Western eyes as ancient Chinese bronzes. These beautiful ritual vessels, which constituted the mainstream of Chinese art for nearly 1500 years, are often of unsurpassed technical refinement and define the very essence of early Chinese art.
Join us for this engrossing talk by Janny Chyn about Chinese bronzes. This lecture is intended to offer some preliminary observations on a number of issues regarding the social dimensions of bronze technology during the Shang and Zhou dynasties in ancient China.
It will first highlight the role of local cultural and ritual traditions in shaping the trajectories of early bronze technology. Then, it will examine the development of bronze technology during the Shang and Zhou dynasties in the Central Plain, in order to understand the driving forces behind innovations in bronze technology there. Finally, it will focus on the development of bronze technology in the peripheral regions of the Central Plain, and explore the crucial influence of social-cultural factors on the formation of some local bronze traditions.
