Most people know about the Qin Dynasty terracotta warriors in Xi’an as they are world-famous. But in Xuzhou you can see the royal tombs and the only excavated terracotta warriors of the Han Dynasty.
In the early 2nd century BC some of the closest and most trusted relatives of the Emperors were awarded territories within the Han realm over which they ruled as kings. A number of these royal tombs in eastern China (especially around the Han family’s home town of Xuzhou) were discovered during road building and excavated after 1980 .
These excavations have provided a wealth of evidence about Han period tombs, funerary practices and their beliefs about the afterlife. Han terracotta warriors are a bit smaller compared to the ones in Xi’an, about 40 centimeters tall. They are very detailed and some are standing, some on their knees and some sitting. The details are amazingly fine and the warriors in attack position give an insight in how the military would have looked like in that period of time.
We will take the high-speed train to Xuzhou to discover the secrets of Han Tombs and Terracotta Warriors, and explore the ancient buildings of Hubu Mountain.
